Spring Course Registration: 100W, 172, and 158

If you have not registered for your spring classes, please do so.  Enrollment is watched very closely and courses that are low in enrollment are in jeopardy of being cancelled - such as 100W and HS 172 (MW 9-10:15AM).   If you are planning on enrolling in a course, but you are unable to enroll at this moment, please complete the survey so we know we know more about course needs.

As many now know, HS 158 had two sections scheduled at the exact same time with the same instructor and one section (3,4) was cancelled.    Given this unfortunate event, everyone who was (or still is) enrolled in HS 158, you have a few options to consider.

Option 1: Substitute HS 158

There will be two approved substitutions for HS 158 this semester. You can enroll in either of these substitution-approved courses instead of HS 158 and it will count to the degree requirement. We will complete whatever necessary paperwork this requires (e.g. substitution forms for those who have already submitted a grad app).

HS 164: Health and Social Marketing meets Mondays 3 - 5:45. The class is listed has having pre-requisites of HS 158 and HS 159. These will be waived. To get a code to register for this class, please complete this form: http://hsadvising.blogspot.com/2016/11/spring-2017-course-enrollment.html

HS 145: Community Mental Health meets Thursday 3 - 5:45. You can enroll in the class without any type of permission code.

HS 172: Contemporary Environmental Health Issues meets Mondays and Wednesdays 9-10:15.  You can enroll in this class without a code if you have completed more than 60 units already and you have passed the WST. 

Option 2: Take HS 158 another semester

We anticipate offering this course regularly going forward. If you wish to take it at a later time in your progression through the major, you are welcome to do that and take a different course this semester. If you need help deciding whether this is a good option for you, please visit with a faculty advisor or a peer advisor. Option 3* (Possibility): Register for section (1,2)

Right now HS 158 (1,2) is full with a waitlist. However, it is possible that students might drop that class in order to take HS 145 or HS 164 or to delay taking HS 158. Those of you in section (3,4) who prefer to stay in HS 158 at the time that you planned on taking it might want to get on the waitlist for HS 158 (1,2) in case room opens up. 

Preparing for Fieldwork and some other SP17 enrollment reminders

If you are planning on enrolling in HS 166A and B in the spring you need to attend the fieldwork expo this semester.

There is an internship available for the spring with the SF Department of Public Health and if you're interested, you'll want to be prepared at the fieldwork expo.  Please review this program flyer for this specific internship opportunity. 

There are also several sections of HS 100W with a lot of openings and we have three elective courses (HS 164-Social Marketing, HS 145-Community Mental Health, HS 176-Global Health*Updated* HS global health course will be cancelled due to low enrollment.) that need more students.  

Please enroll in your spring courses as soon as you are able so we can avoid the unnecessary cancellation of classes - and - if you have any troubles or questions with enrollment, remember to complete the online survey here.

As you may recall from prior email messages, a buzz around the department, and this prior blog post - the undergraduate program will be changing from Health Science to Public Health.

Exciting new changes coming to the undergraduate Health Science Program: A letter from the program coordinator

Dear Health Science Students,

I wanted to let you know about some exciting changes that will be coming to our department and program over the next few years.

As some of you may know, our department offers a Master of Public Health, which has been accredited by the Council on Education for PublicHealth (CEPH) since 1974. Over the past several years, opportunities for students throughout the country to pursue undergraduate degrees in public health have expanded and as a result, CEPH now offers accreditation forBachelor's programs in Public Health.

As our faculty has learned more about accreditation for Bachelor’s programs and about the criteria these programs will be held accountable to, we have decided that we should seek accreditation for our undergraduate degree! This is a reflection of our confidence in our undergraduate degree and our commitment to always providing our graduates with the best education available.

There are three changes that you will be seeing take effect over the next few years. None of these changes will delay your graduation or prevent you from getting the quality education you have come to expect from our department.

1.     Beginning in Fall 2017, our degree title will be changing to Public Health. The undergraduate degrees available in our program will be: B.S. in Public Health, B.S. in Public Health with a concentration in Health Services Administration, and a Minor in Public Health.

Students who are currently in any of the Health Science degrees and graduating in Fall 2017 or later will have the choice of keeping the degree name “Health Science” or switching to a degree name of “Public Health.” (Please see this link to open the FAQ in another window for more details.)

2.     We will be making some modifications to the existing curriculum to be sure that our degree meets the accreditation standards set out by CEPH. These changes will take effect beginning in Fall 2018. Our faculty have been hard at work reviewing our current curriculum and exploring options and we welcome your input. See this link to FAQ for a list of ways that you can become involved in contributing ideas to the new curriculum.

3.     Once our curriculum is in effect, we will be seeking accreditation from CEPH, which means that our degree will be an accredited B.S. in Public Health. Accreditation of a program assures its quality and communicates to potential employers or graduate schools that you have met the nationally recognized standards for public health education. We anticipate receiving accreditation in Fall 2018 or Spring 2019.
