Spring enrollment in HS 100W and HS 161 - your feedback is needed!

Fall 2015 Enrollment Update

Fall 2015 is right around the corner and our courses are filling up!  Following are some last minute reminders, possibilities, and opportunities for your fall schedule.

  1. Fall Welcome Assembly will be held on 8/19 12:00-4:00 - all students should plan on attending (more information to come soon)
  2. There are still a few openings in many of our Health Science Fall courses:
    • Prep Courses with openings - HS 1 and 67
    • Core Courses with openings - HS 100W, 103, 161, 162, 167, 164
    • Elective options with openings - HS 107, 108, 111, 140, 172
  3. We are working on adding another section of HS 135 - so, check the schedule for a new section and we are trying to add another section of HS 25 as well.
  4. A few suggestions on course sequencing to keep in mind:
    • HS 165 is a course that you should be taking in your final semester.  If you're graduating Fall 2015  you should be enrolled in this course, otherwise, you should not.
    • HS 166A/B is the fieldwork seminar and you need to enroll in both courses in the same semester.   This is required for all Health Services Administration Concentration majors and should be taken in your final semester - along with HS 165.
    • HS 159 is required of all students and should be taken the semester prior to your graduation semester. If you are on track to graduate in Spring 2016 you should be enrolled.  If you are not - you are strongly, strongly advised to enroll in other HS courses.
    • HS 158 is not being offered this fall and if you planned to take this course you can enroll in any upper division 3-unit course as a substitute.  I recommend the elective options that were listed above.
    • HS 164 is an option for seniors who are enrolled in 159 or 165.
    • As soon as you're eligible for 100W you should enroll in this course.  If you are in the HSA concentration you are advised to enroll in HS 100W and 162 as soon as you can.
  5. We have a lot of student clubs and getting involved on campus is a great way to meet people, find peer support, and balance your academic load with some fun.  Representatives from the student clubs will be available at the fall welcome so you can learn more about these opportunities.
If you have questions about academic advising and want to meet with a faculty advisor we will be available at the fall welcome assembly and our fall advising hours will be made available at that time.

Enjoy your last week of summer and we will see you all on 8/19 for the fall welcome.

Peer Advisor Recruitment for FA15/SP16

Here is a wonderful opportunity to get involved within the HS&R department! Our current HS Peer Advisors are recruiting for the Fall 2015/Spring 2016 Academic Year. Health Science Peer Advisors are students leaders who work with faculty advisors to offer academic planning advice to Health Science students as they progress along their pathway to graduation. Peer Advisors are also knowledgeable about and encourage campus and department involvement in activities and student organizations. Being a Peer Advisor is a great way to meet other students, work closely with faculty, help others, and learn about our program. If you are interested and meet the Peer Advisor Expectations listed bellow, please fill out our online application by Sunday, August 9th at 5pm.

To be considered for a HS Peer Advisor you need to...

a) Fill out the online application by Sunday, August 9th at 5pm
b) Be a current enrolled HS student, in good academic standing
c) Be on track to graduate no sooner than Spring 2016
d) Have time to take on an additional responsibility (2-4 hours a week)
e) Be available to attend, participate in, and provide assistance during advising events - including the Fall Welcome Assembly on August 19th.

If you have any questions you can email the current Peer Advisors.

Drop-in advising hours Monday, 5/11/15

A faculty advisor will be available on campus on Monday, May 11 for drop in advising in MH 438A between 10-11:15 and 12:45-2:00.  These additional drop-in hours will take place in the Dean's Conference Room so shared questions can be discussed together.   Please come prepared to discuss your questions in small groups.

Faculty Advising is winding down for the semester and the hours that are posted on the blog are the only remaining advising hours available for this spring.   Advising questions will be answered over the summer, but the email question response time will be significantly slower and on-campus availability will be greatly reduced.

All declared Health Science undergraduate students are expected to attend the Fall Welcome Assembly being planned for the afternoon of Wednesday, August 19th where the department leadership will provide an opportunity to discuss the program, courses, student opportunities, and advising questions and processes.

Spring 2015 Fieldwork Expo

If you are planning to enroll in HS 166A and HS 166B in the fall, then you need to attend the Health Science Fieldwork Expo on Friday 5/8 from 10:30-11:30AM in MH324.  Representatives from potential internship sites will be present. You must apply to and be accepted to internships over the summer in order to start your 200 hours of fieldwork the first week of the fall semester and this is your best way to connect with folks.  This is a fantastic resource for you to learn from the experiences of your peers and identify where you'd like to pursue for your internship.  You'll also meet the faculty members who will support you in this adventure.

Curious what we did in Sacramento last week?

Here is a short video summary highlighting our Health Policy trip to Sacramento last week.  One of the recurring messages throughout our time at the Capitol was the incredible opportunity for careers in our state government and the growing need that exists.  For example, in the Department of Public Health (with a staff of nearly 4000), there is a wave of retirement in the midst, with almost 65% of the employees reaching the retirement window in the next two years!

So, the next time you ask your faculty advisor about where to find a job - one answer is pretty clear!

Spring and Summer Advising Availability

The advising availability schedule has been updated and all of the dates are posted.  Fall 2015 graduation applications are the absolute priority up through the May 1st (firm) University deadline - which means - forms must be completely processed by our department prior to May 1st!     The next priority will be academic planning for the fall semester.  To support students in academic planning we have an event scheduled on May 5th from 12-2 in Hugh Gillis Hall (room 122) where faculty will be talking about summer opportunities, faculty led programs, and academic planning.   If you do not get a chance to meet with an advisor during the dates that are available this spring there will be a few opportunities over the summer to meet on campus, but all should plan on attending the fall welcome assembly.

Fall 2015 Welcome Back Assembly is being planned for August 19th from 1-5.  It is expected that all students in the Health Science and Recreation department will attend this event - so save the date!   We will discuss important department information, student clubs and involvement, events, and advising.  This is a great way to connect and stay up to date with processes, procedures, expectations, and opportunities.

This year we are also going on an evening Sacramento River Cruise to network and get to know each other.

Junior and Senior HS students, who have an interest in public policy, are strongly encouraged to apply.  Additionally, this year, we can select up to 2 MPH students to attend.

Apply by Friday, 2/27/15 online

HS 164 and HS 100W openings for SP15

Attention all Health Science majors: If you are enrolled in HS 159 or you have completed HS 159 you can consider enrolling in HS 164. The course has low enrollment and we are in need of additional students. If you're interested, please attend class today (Monday, February 2nd) at 3:00 in BBC 202. For most HS majors, HS 164 can be used as core major requirement (to replace HS 159B) or it can be used as an upper division elective. We also have room in the new 100W friday morning section. We opened up the new section given demand for the course and now we need students to enroll! Please contact the HS office to inquire about the Friday morning 100W section.
